A little while ago one of our writers attended an event at The Mystery Box Show. It took place at the Alberta Rose Theatre in Portland, OR. Their motto? It’s all about sex. And it’s all true.
WTF is...
The Mystery Box Show
That’s right! Their shows are about everyday people, from all lifestyles. Their only commonality is sex. Sometimes the storytellers are sex educators, or authors, some adult film veterans, while other times they are moms, grocery store clerks… average people simply wanting to share their story.
When I walked into the theater, I felt nervous. I wasn’t sure why, but since I’m empathetic my first instinct was—these people are going to tell very intimate stories about themselves—and it made me feel anxious for them. But the theater was adorable and those in the audience were happily chatting away as the hosts of the show set up, so I set myself at ease.
First time for...
My friend and I chose a seat up front so we’d have the best view. Even though many of my friends had attended shows before, I had no idea what to expect. So when the first speaker came out and shared his story, I was pleasantly surprised. He was sharing about his first time hiring a masseuse… You know, the kind that will massage manly bits and not just the back? He shared about his nervousness, his decision to try, and the hilarious experiences that followed. I was laughing so hard that my stomach and cheeks throbbed by the time he’d finished.
Not all stories were comedic, though. Others involved getting to know their bodies in a serious sort of way, and some were about finding enlightenment through sexuality, one shared a story about becoming a Daddy to her submissive. The stories varied just enough that the more serious ones weren’t too heavy. And each sharer got a loud cheer from the audience when finished.
Anyone can share their sex stories:
The storytellers were beautiful, funny, and brave for getting on stage and sharing such intimate memories with us. While I went for entertainment, I learned things about what sexuality means to others, about finding humor in things gone awry, and even about parts of myself that I didn’t fully understand. Their sharing did more than just entertain. They gave us all food for thought.
The hosts, Reba and Eric, were great as well. They worked hard to make sure everyone felt at ease and they gave out prizes and asked those in the audience to anonymously share their most embarrassing memories by filling out a card that they later read on stage! Those naughty details are posted on their twitter feed @mysteryboxpdx.
If you’re into sex-positive stories, I highly recommend The Mystery Box Show. Their pricing is very reasonable and even if you get the VIP tickets, they’re affordable and come with a goody bag that makes paying the higher price worth the investment! When visiting Portland, Or, definitely check out one of their shows!
