While it is no doubt true that most of the mainstream porn is made for and enjoyed by men, the idea that women do not watch porn is oversimplified. It might be fair to say that mainstream porn does not offer the female audience what we want. However, there are actually numerous female directors who are adding a woman’s voice to this male-dominated industry. Let’s have a look at a few of them and what they do:
Any list about female porn directors must include this pioneer of the field who was among the first women to make hot porn for women. Prior to directing she was an actress in numerous adult films and after moving behind the camera she started her own production company in the 80’s. She innovated the concept of “couples porn”, which is meant for couples to enjoy together as the name suggests (which, studies say, is the favoured form of enjoying porn for women, whereas men tend to see watching porn as a solitary pursuit). An illustrious grand old lady of the porn industry, she is now mentoring the young female porn directors as well as publishing books and developing special vibrators – in other words, still keeping very busy in the world of adult entertainment.
A Swedish-born blonde (oh, the clichés!), Lust is an award-winning erotic film director, producer and author. Her steamy films have a strongly feminist point of view where women are empowered to enjoy their sexuality, rather than being seen as objects for men’s desires. The films are also cinematographically beautiful with seriously sexy actors, gorgeous settings and great music. Her latest project, XConfessions has an innovative concept whereby Lust chooses a few of public’s own sex stories posted on her site anonymously and turns them into edgy short films, resulting in a totally new genre of adult film.
A jack-of-all-trades of sex industry, Taormino was working as a sex-advice columnist before starting to direct her own erotic films with a mission to educate, empower and entertainment everyone regardless of their sexual orientation. As a sex-positive feminist, Taormino is looking to challenge the traditional representation of women in porn and prioritizes female pleasure in her films. Her work includes Chemistry, a reality-based porn series as well as educational films such as Expert Guide to Anal Sex and Expert Guide to G Spot.
Kane is another actress-turned-director in the adult film industry. Her films show that porn made by women does not necessarily mean romance and flowers as her style is more dirty, hardcore and extremely hot. While Kane does not push a particularly feminist point of view in her films, there is still that unique female touch to the way she depicts the intense sex scenes including anything from bondage to gangbangs.
Often dubbed “lesbian Hugh Hefner,” Lumpkin is not actually a director but the founder and Chief Sexy Officer of Juicy Pink Box lifestyle brand, which specializes in lesbian erotic films and entices all women to explore their lesbian fantasies. Lumpkin is considered part of the feminist porn movement seeking to offer a more positive and inclusive way of depicting sex and her films have won “Feminist Porn Awards” more than once for producing some of the hottest girl-on-girl action out there.
