Sex columnist, photographer and sex blogger Molly Moore gives her best advice on this masturbation technique & how to get freaky with veggies.

Dear Molly
I read a story about a girl using a carrot for masturbation, and it made me curious about using fruit and vegetables as a masturbation technique. The idea turns me on, but I have not done it as I am not sure if it a good idea. I also keep thinking the cashier is going to know why I am buying a cucumber.

Do you think it is safe to use fruits or vegetables as a masturbation technique? Do you have any suggestions of how I can get over my embarrassment when it comes to buying them?

People have been using all sorts of phallic shaped objects for masturbation since the beginning of human history. We even know that carving penis shaped objects was something man did as soon as he had the tools and knowledge to do so. I am fairly sure that over the many years since then various fruits and vegetables have been used by many people for masturbation. Myself included. Yes, I have totally done this. Chilled carrots were my favourite insertable until I bought my first glass dildo. I also had a partner use a cucumber on me once, and we tried an aubergine, but it was too big.

Is this a safe masturbation technique?

I don't think there are any particular risks involved as long as you wash the items thoroughly beforehand. I can't see that there is any more risk using a vegetable for masturbation than letting someone put their fingers inside you. However, to be entirely on the safe side, you might consider covering them with a condom when you use them for masturbation.

Not the most economic masturbation technique

Also, I would say they are one-use only items. Once you have used them, then I would suggest throwing them away. Which of course means they are not the most environmentally friendly or economic option for masturbation. As a one-off thing to try or to fulfil a particular curiosity or fantasy then I can't see a problem with it. However, as a regular masturbation technique, I think you would be better off buying yourself a dildo. There are tons on the market and glass is an excellent material to try. It makes beautiful toys, and they are very easy to keep clean.

Can you use vegetables for anal play?

Depending on your preferred masturbation techniques and what feels right, there are lots of fantastic sex toys out there to enjoy. Just remember to buy those that are made of body-safe materials such as silicone, glass and properly treated wood.
Having said that, fruits or vegetables are NOT OK to use as an anal toy. You should never insert anything into your bottom that does not have a flared base of some type. The way the sphincter work means it is possible for items to be drawn up inside you. If there is nothing to stop them, they can go all the way in. That could result in a very embarrassing trip to the hospital. If you are interested in anal play, I do urge you to buy a toy that is designed specifically for that.

Will people know I'm buying vegetables to use as a masturbation technique

As for the shopping part of this adventure I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. Most people who work at the check-out are not remotely interested in what you are buying. They are just there to do their job; scan the products, get the money, and next customer. Someone buying a cucumber or carrots is entirely normal, and no one will assume it's for masturbation. Even if all you bought was a cucumber, they are not going to take a blind bit of notice. However, if you are very concerned, then the self-service check-out is most definitely your friend. There you get to do it all yourself, and there is no staff member for you to have to deal with.

Whatever you decide to do I hope you have fun.

Molly
